GROWING UP and meeting your needs
Who is the person you need to relate to most in your life? YOU! No matter who else you are relating to you always have to relate to oneself first! That is why I feel the conscious awareness and personal growth aspects of my work are the most important. I am sure many have heard the old dictum: “MAN KNOW THY SELF” given by the great philosopher, Socrates. Well that is exactly what my work in self-awareness and awakening skill development is all about. It is simply getting to know oneself more fully and what it is to be congruent with all one’s differing aspects, the good, the bad and the so called ugly, parts!
We all have thoughts and feelings that we experience and do not want. Everyone has self-talk that holds them back. So in order to help my clients work with limiting self-talk and uncomfortable feelings I use energy work along with self-awareness and awakening skills. That is why I am writing this blog today so that people may see how one can consciously work with uncomfortable feelings and habitual patterns one may wish to change.
I am going to explore how to be skillful with one’s thoughts and feelings. Because once I work together with a client, they learn how to deal with these uncomfortable feelings and the limiting self-talk. And then the client will be able to develop this skill for themself.
An example of a session would be as follows: a client would pick an emotion or a habitual pattern that he/she wants to work with. This way of working with uncomfortable emotions and patterns is different than one may have experienced before. It is going to be like we are going to a party where we are celebrating these emotions! There are many reasons to celebrate our emotions. So what emotion can we celebrate that is a recurring uncomfortable emotional experience? If we were working together I would use a couple of different approaches which may also include something called voice dialog where one gets in touch with the aspect of oneself that feels the discomfort of the feeling and feels stuck there! What happens for many people is that they have an experience in childhood and as a child they formed an image or belief connected to that unpleasant experience. Often the child consciousness gets stuck there emotionally and the pattern of the uncomfortable feeling keeps reoccurring, and for good reason I may add! It is so because the universe is supportive in healing and the re-occurrence will hopefully spur one on to pay attention and heal the discomfort.
In a session I might ask a person to describe the emotion to me….maybe at first to describe the feeling as a person and ask "does it have a name?" During the client’s description is where it sometimes gets tricky for people because they will switch back and forth from child consciousness to the adult consciousness …not just the part that is stuck in the uncomfortable emotion. I would ask some questions and have the client describe the experience to me physically, mentally and emotionally. Then one of the best ways to deal with uncomfortable feelings is by taking action and meeting the physical need and also by just being present with the feelings. Feelings change just by awareness and attention to them. A person can bring to mind ways of connecting more with the discomfort and breathing through it. After the emotion has been allowed to be there then one can begin to work with the image that was formed in child consciousness. Once we have defined that aspect of self or persona, then we can begin the integration and the clearing of any misconceptions.
After the client has made that connection to the child’s experience I might have him/her start a dialog with that younger self. For example, “What would you tell that young aspect of yourself with all the life experience you now have as an adult and all the wisdom you have gained over this lifetime?” Sometimes the child consciousness is seeking something from the adult. I have the client pay attention to this younger part and see what the need is …and then as the adult, give to that young part what is needed! I have the client ask his/her heart, not the mind! One can use the whole person then to create healing for oneself, body mind and soul! So if the younger part wants attention and has a need that was never met as a child, then the client can start by giving attention to that aspect of child consciousness by meeting the need on each level…..i.e. physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. And of course I would be working energetically to bring in more energy and healing where ever it is lacking.
We would work together while in dialog with one another rather than having the client lying on the healing table for a healing which is usually less interactive. This type of conscious awareness work along with the energetic work really brings wholeness and completeness to the adult that the client has become. Growing up emotionally, mentally and spiritually brings forth the fullness of who one really is and the emotional maturity that matches chronological age.
When clients finish one of our self-awareness/ awakening skills sessions they leave feeling more connected with themselves and what is true for them. They also feel empowered to meet their needs as they arise in the moment. This ability to meet one’s own needs rather than looking outside are truly priceless.
